Algeria to deploy chronotachygraphes for heavy vehicles and buses

Algeria is preparing to implement the widespread use of the chronotachygraphe, a device designed to monitor vehicle speed and driver driving times. The initiative, led by the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, aims to reduce fatal road accidents by curbing speeding and driver fatigue.

The regulation will specifically target heavy goods vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes and passenger transport vehicles with more than nine seats. The deployment follows legal provisions established in the new highway code published in May.

During a coordination meeting in Algiers, Minister Sayoud instructed officials to accelerate technical and organizational preparations. The National Union of Taxi Transporters has expressed support for the measure, viewing it as a positive step toward enhancing passenger safety and improving sector organization.
