Algeria to reform agricultural law to boost cereal production

Algerian Agriculture Minister Sid Ali Khaldi has announced a major revision of the country’s agricultural orientation law, a move ordered by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to increase sector efficiency. During a meeting with regional agricultural directors in Algiers to prepare for the 2026-2027 season, Khaldi described the reform as a “turning point” aimed at achieving food sovereignty.

The new legislation focuses heavily on the cereal sector to reduce reliance on imports and save foreign currency. Key objectives for the upcoming season include expanding the surface area dedicated to cereal cultivation, introducing climate-resilient wheat varieties, and developing a more precise agricultural map.

To support these goals, the ministry plans to provide technical training for farmers and establish technical monitoring cells in every wilaya. The reform aims to optimize crop distribution based on national needs, improve yields, and protect farmers while creating new employment opportunities.
