Algeria wildfires cause 12 deaths and widespread infrastructure damage
Wildfires across northern and eastern Algeria have resulted in at least 12 deaths and dozens of injuries. The most severe fatalities occurred in the wilayas of Jijel, Béjaïa, and Tizi Ouzou. In response to the tragedy, the Algerian government declared three days of national mourning starting August 27.
Emergency services and the People's National Army (ANP) have been heavily mobilized to combat the flames. Authorities confirmed that all fires reported between August 26 and 30 have now been contained and controlled. Efforts are now shifting toward recovery and the restoration of essential services.
Infrastructure damage is significant, particularly to electrical and telecommunications networks. The utility company Sonelgaz reported damage to high and medium voltage pylons and lines in regions including Béjaïa, Jijel, Skikda, and Tizi Ouzou. Technical teams are working to restore electricity and water supplies, while mobile stations are being deployed to compensate for damaged internet and telephone coverage. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited survivors at a specialized burn hospital in Zéralda to check on their condition.
