Algeria wildfires cause 12 deaths and 54 injuries
Wildfires sweeping through northeastern Algeria have resulted in at least 12 deaths and 54 injuries. The fatalities are distributed across the provinces of Jijel (5), Bejaia (4), and Tizi Ouzou (3). At least six of the injured remain in serious condition.
In response to the tragedy, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has declared three days of national mourning and canceled scheduled cultural and sporting events. The fires, fueled by intense heatwaves and strong winds, have been difficult to contain. Civil Protection authorities reported 193 fire outbreaks within a 24-hour period, with dozens still active.
Emergency response efforts involve the use of helicopters and water-bombing aircraft. Meanwhile, a significant wave of domestic solidarity has emerged, with citizens, charities, and local businesses organizing humanitarian convoys to deliver food, water, and medical supplies to the hardest-hit regions of Jijel and Bejaia.
