Algeria defender Aïssa Mandi retires from international football

Aïssa Mandi, the 34‑year‑old central defender who holds the record for appearances with the Algerian national team, announced his retirement from international football in a video posted on his social media accounts. Over a 13‑year span (2013‑2026) he earned 123 caps and scored eight goals, making him the most‑capped player in Algerian history.

Mandi highlighted key moments of his career, recalling the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title and his participation in the 2014 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, the latter ending with a 0‑2 loss to Switzerland on 3 July 2026. He said, “Il est venu le moment pour moi de vous dire au revoir,” adding that he departs with a “conscience tranquille.”

Despite ending his international duties, Mandi will continue his club career in Spain, having signed a two‑year contract with second‑division side Levante UD after spells at Reims, Real Betis, Villarreal, Lille and Villarreal. He also noted his decision to reject a call‑up from France early in his career, opting to represent Algeria throughout.
