Algerian dinar strengthens against euro amid IMF warnings

The Algerian dinar has continued to strengthen against the euro on the official interbank market. According to the latest quotations from the Bank of Algeria, the euro was valued at 152.2883 dinars on September 24, 2026, down from 153.5240 dinars on September 18. While the pace of appreciation has slowed recently, the trend suggests a potential reduction in the cost of imports for Algerian businesses.

However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised concerns regarding the widening gap between the official exchange rate and the rate found in the parallel market. In a report released on September 21, the IMF noted that the ‘parallel exchange rate premium has increased,’ signaling growing tensions within the national monetary system. This divergence serves as an indicator of the imbalance between the supply and demand for foreign currency and reflects economic actors' confidence in the local currency.
