Algerian Football Federation corruption trial set for October 13

The trial of former Algerian Football Federation (FAF) president Kheïreddine Zetchi and several other former officials has been scheduled to begin on October 13. The proceedings follow multiple postponements, including a recent delay due to the absence of a defense attorney.

The defendants, which include former FAF president Charaf-Eddine Amara, former secretaries-general, and a former deputy director-general, face serious charges including abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds, and the conclusion of contracts that violated regulations to provide unjustified advantages.

Investigations by financial crime units focused on the governance of the FAF between 2017 and 2023. Key irregularities identified include the mismanagement of funds during the organization of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. Specific allegations involve the blatant overbilling of accommodation and catering costs, as well as unexplained payments in foreign currency to local international players.
