Algerian Football Federation ends contract with coach Vladimir Petkovic

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on 3 August 2026 that the contract with national team coach Vladimir Petkovic was terminated by mutual agreement. Petkovic, a 62‑year‑old Swiss‑Bosnian, had taken charge of the Algerian side in March 2024 and posted a record‑breaking 2.24 points per game over 33 matches, the best in the federation’s history. His contract, originally set to run until 2028, was ended without a detailed explanation, though the FAF cited a loss of “serenity, stability and confidence” in the partnership.

Algeria’s exit from the 2026 World Cup – a round‑of‑16 defeat to Switzerland after a loss to Argentina – intensified pressure on Petkovic. Media reports suggest the federation may have paid a severance ranging from three months’ salary to up to a year’s remuneration. The FAF has begun a search for a new coach, with names such as Rafael Benítez, Roberto Martínez and former Nigeria coach José Peseiro mentioned as possible candidates.
