Algerian Football Federation weighs staff overhaul after World Cup exit

After the Algerian national team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) began restructuring the coaching staff. Assistant coach Davide Morandi is reportedly facing contract termination without compensation, as the FAF claims his appearances on Swiss television violated contractual obligations. The federation says it can end his contract without paying indemnities.

Head coach Vladimír Petkovic, whose contract runs until 2028 with a salary of €160,000 per month, remains in place while the FAF considers three options: an amicable departure with a reduced settlement, retaining Petkovic but overhauling the staff to include Algerian assistants, or a unilateral contract termination that could cost the federation up to €5 million. The decision is expected to be influenced by the upcoming 2027 African Cup of Nations.
