Algerian President to visit Spain in October to normalize relations
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is scheduled to make a state visit to Spain in October 2026, following an invitation from King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. This visit marks a significant step in the normalization of bilateral relations between Madrid and Algiers after a period of tension that peaked in 2022 when Algeria suspended a 2002 friendship treaty following Spain's shift in stance regarding Western Sahara.
The upcoming summit follows a July 2026 meeting in Algiers where both leaders agreed to enhance political dialogue and cooperation on security and migration. Key topics for the October visit include energy, migration, and security. As Spain's primary gas supplier, Algeria has agreed to increase exports via the Medgaz pipeline by approximately 10% and double the amount of liquefied natural gas transported by tankers.
Migration remains a critical issue, as Frontex has noted an increase in irregular arrivals via the Algerian route. The visit is also expected to include a High-Level Meeting, the first of its kind since 2018, to solidify institutional cooperation.
