Algeria's euro rate climbs on black market amid new tourism allowance rules

The parallel market in Algeria saw the euro rise to about 27,750 dinars per 100 units on 20 July, with the dollar and other foreign currencies also gaining. Traders attribute the surge to recent changes to the 750‑euro tourism allowance, which now require beneficiaries to hold a euro‑denominated bank account and an international card. The stricter conditions have driven many travelers to the informal market for currency purchases, tightening demand and pushing rates higher.

At the same time, the Algerian National Meteorological Office issued orange‑level heat alerts for a large part of the country, forecasting temperatures up to 49 °C in southern wilayas and sustained highs of 44‑46 °C across many regions through 21 July. Nighttime temperatures will remain elevated, worsening the heat stress for residents.

The combined economic pressure on the dinar and the extreme weather pose challenges for households and authorities alike.
