Algeria's Fennecs confront coaching uncertainty after World Cup exit

Algeria's national football team, the Fennecs, were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after a 0‑2 loss to Switzerland in the round of 16, following a group stage that included a 0‑3 defeat to Argentina, a 2‑1 win over Jordan, a 3‑3 draw with Austria and a victory over an unnamed opponent. In the wake of the defeat, the Algerian Football Federation has reportedly reached out to Eric Chelle, the current Nigeria coach, as a potential replacement for former manager Vladimir Petković, whose contract was terminated after the tournament.

Defender Aissa Mandi, who faced rumors of international retirement, said he has not retired but will decide his future after a new coach is appointed. Mandi expressed frustration with the team's performance, noting the disappointment of a 12‑year‑long World Cup absence and vowing to await the next steps for the national side.
