Alghero debates proposed reform of Porto Conte Park governance

A draft reform of the regional ecological network proposes significant changes to the governance of Porto Conte Park, which protects the natural and landscape heritage of Alghero.

The current model grants exclusive management responsibility to the Alghero City Council, ensuring representation for both majority and opposition parties. The proposed reform would replace the current Assembly with a restricted body composed of institutional representatives. Under this new structure, the Municipality of Alghero would hold 52% of the votes, while the Region, Metropolitan City, and FoReSTAS would hold 24%, 12%, and 12% respectively.

Critics argue that while Alghero would maintain an absolute majority, it would lose its exclusive governing authority. Furthermore, the reform could prevent the municipality from independently approving its own statute, as such actions would require a two-thirds majority of weighted votes. There are also concerns regarding the lack of guaranteed representation for political minorities under the new model.
