Alghero disability service shortage sparks political debate

A social media testimony from a mother in Alghero has reignited debate regarding the shortage of disability services in Sardinia. After 16 years of providing 24-hour care for her daughter, a mother named Sara announced her family's decision to relocate to the Veneto region to access adequate support services.

Sara noted that in Veneto, her daughter now participates in structured daily activities with educators and volunteers, a reality she described as having previously seemed like a ‘utopia’ in Alghero. She highlighted the risk of caregiver burnout and criticized the local institutional failure to provide continuous services, noting that despite existing laws, the burden of organizing fragmented care often falls on families.

In response to the testimony, Giovanna Caria, a counselor for the Riformatori Sardi, has called on the Social Services department for clarification regarding a proposed daycare center in Alghero. Caria questioned the current status and timeline for the project announced for the Tarragona area, emphasizing the urgent need for such facilities.
