Alghero faces political dispute over arson claims and leadership changes
Political tensions have risen in Alghero following claims by former Sardinia Regional President Mauro Pili regarding a potential arson attack. Pili suggested that an incident involving a fire at a local restaurant might be linked to organized crime, citing confidential expert hypotheses of intentional origin.
In response, the local Fratelli d’Italia branch criticized Pili’s statements, arguing that he prematurely labeled a fire as an “attack” to support claims of mafia presence before official investigations are complete. The party emphasized the importance of distinguishing facts from hypotheses to avoid undermining legitimate anti-mafia efforts.
Separately, Alghero Mayor Raimondo Cacciotto and City Council President Mimmo Pirisi met with Carabinieri Captain Michele Marruso to mark his departure after four years of service. Marruso is moving to a new professional role within the Carabinieri, receiving official thanks from the municipal administration for his work in the community.
