Alghero: Freediver dies during competition preparations

A 48-year-old freediver, Francesco Pagni, died in the waters of the Gulf of Alghero while preparing for a competition. Pagni, originally from Sarzana, was working with colleagues to set up the course for the 2026 Italian Championship qualifying event.

The Coast Guard recovered his body after he failed to resurface. Authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The championship, organized by Gs Corallo Sub, is scheduled to take place on September 18-19.
