Alghero officials demand clarity on delayed remediation of burnt palace

Local representatives in Alghero are demanding transparency from the municipal administration regarding the “Palazzo bruciato” (Burnt Palace), a building devastated by a fire in July 2017. The site has become a symbol of abandonment and urban decay in the heart of the city.

In August 2023, authorities announced the start of safety and remediation works, with Giorico Costruzioni tasked with the project. The planned interventions included installing an impassable fence, shoring up the first basement level, removing debris and waste, and conducting environmental air monitoring. Although completion was expected by October 30, 2025, local coordinators Manuel Alivesi of Centro 20 Venti and Donato Capuano have called for clarity on the current status of the works.

Representatives argue that the delay is not merely an administrative issue but a significant concern for public safety, urban decorum, and the international tourism image of Alghero.
