Alghero faces resident loss despite record tourism levels

Alghero, the most visited municipality in Sardinia, is facing a demographic paradox: while tourism numbers remain high, the city is experiencing a continuous loss of residents. Local representatives from Fratelli d’Italia have highlighted several contributing factors to this depopulation, including declining birth rates, an aging population, youth emigration, job precariousness, and the seasonal nature of employment.

Other critical issues cited include the rising cost of living, difficulties in accessing housing, insufficient essential services, and inadequate transport links. To address these challenges, the center-right coalition has called for the establishment of a special commission on demographic issues. They aim to develop an organic strategy that includes fiscal interventions and measures to transform tourism into stable, year-round economic development to attract investment and qualified employment.

Separately, residents in the Alghero area have raised concerns regarding infrastructure safety, specifically requesting improved lighting and protected cycling paths on the SP 42 road to protect pedestrians and cyclists from heavy traffic.
