Italian towns revamp waste management: Alghero launches new service, Casaletto Spartano revises collection schedule

In Alghero, municipal officials are discussing a new waste‑handling service with local unions, aiming to improve collection and recycling. The city has also introduced 400 narrow‑mouth waste bins, two environmental guards and has issued around forty fines for littering. Three eco‑centres operate daily, with plans for a door‑to‑door system to start in October.

Casaletto Spartano will start a new door‑to‑door differentiated‑waste collection on 1 August 2026. The municipality split the area into Zone A (urban centre and nearby frazioni) and Zone B (outlying villages). Residents must place waste outside homes between 22:00 and 06:00 and use transparent or semi‑transparent bags for non‑recyclables. Metal waste will be collected every two weeks, and bulky items must be taken to the local ecological island.
