Algoma Steel resumes production following power plant turbine failure
Algoma Steel Group Inc. has resumed electric arc furnace (EAF) production at its Sault Ste. Marie facility as of August 29, 2026. This follows an unplanned outage at its Lake Superior Power (LSP) generating facility caused by a turbine failure first reported in mid-August.
The company is currently operating under interim arrangements coordinated with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to maintain sustained production while the affected turbine remains unavailable. The IESO is reviewing upcoming planned power system outages to minimize potential interruptions to steelmaking operations while ensuring provincial electricity system reliability.
Algoma is pursuing several options to restore full generating capacity, including repairing the existing turbine and securing a replacement. The company is working with GE and other parties to evaluate these alternatives. Algoma continues to assess the potential impact on production and shipments, noting that mitigation measures are expected to reduce the overall impact.
