Algorand names William Herkelrath CEO to lead post-quantum push

The Algorand Foundation has appointed William Herkelrath as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Staci Warden, who is stepping down after nearly five years in the role. Herkelrath, who officially assumed the position on August 31, brings two decades of experience in artificial intelligence, institutional finance, and blockchain infrastructure, having previously held leadership roles at Chainlink and Curv and co-founding the AI automation platform K3 Labs.

Under Herkelrath’s leadership, Algorand is intensifying its focus on institutional adoption and post-quantum resilience. The network has already implemented native Falcon-based post-quantum accounts, and its innovations in this space were cited extensively in research by Google Quantum AI. While the network has made significant strides in deploying post-quantum signatures, experts note that full quantum resilience—including the consensus system and messaging—is a multi-year goal, with broad resilience targeted by the end of 2027.

In addition to the leadership change, the Foundation announced a board reshuffle. Herkelrath and Alex Fowler of Nexus Laboratories are joining the board, while Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier are departing. Parallel to these organizational shifts, Algorand is advancing its financial capabilities through the Debt Algorand Standard Application (D-ASA), which utilizes the Algorand Virtual Machine to execute ACTUS-compliant debt contracts, aiming to automate and standardize tokenized financial products.
