Algés teenager detained after killing mother with chokehold

A 15-year-old boy has been placed in a closed educational center for three months following the death of his 33-year-old mother, Gabriela Barbosa, in Algés, Portugal. The teenager confessed to killing her using a 'mata-leão' (chokehold) after an argument.

The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) is investigating whether the homicide was linked to physical and psychological abuse inflicted by the victim upon her two children. Reports indicate the family had been under the supervision of the Comissão de Proteção de Crianças e Jovens (CPCJ) of Oeiras since 2024 due to a fragile domestic situation. The teenager had reportedly previously reported his mother for mistreating his four-year-old sister.

Additional details reveal a history of domestic violence within the household; the children's father is currently in preventive detention for domestic violence against the mother. The court noted that if the suspect were over 16, the act would likely be classified as qualified homicide. The teenager's legal status allows for educational measures rather than criminal prosecution.
