Ali Ahmeti warns of Albanian marginalisation in North Macedonia

Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), marked Republic Day on 2 August by saying the spirit of the Krushevo Manifesto – a call for equality, respect and coexistence – is fading in North Macedonia. He warned that Albanians are increasingly marginalised across state institutions, administration, diplomacy, security, the judiciary, education, culture, health, the economy and decision‑making processes.

Ahmeti criticised attacks on the official use of the Albanian language, the removal of mechanisms that guaranteed fair representation and protection from majorisation, selective justice and the promotion of a mono‑ethnic state concept. He said these policies are being enabled by some Albanian representatives who have chosen to submit to the authorities rather than defend citizens’ rights. He reaffirmed the commitment to a united, unitary, democratic and European North Macedonia that is fully integrated in NATO and the EU, and called for the Ohrid peace agreement – the modern continuation of the Krushevo spirit – to be respected.
