Ali-Ashraf Darvishian, Iranian writer and researcher, remembered

Born in 1941 in Kermanshah to a working-class family, Darvishian experienced poverty early in life and worked as a laborer before becoming a teacher in rural areas.
Darvishian was known for his ‘political writing,’ focusing on the struggles of marginalized groups and criticizing censorship and injustice. He famously referred to himself as a ‘cultural guerrilla’ and was a signatory of the ‘134 Writers’ text’ in 1994, which challenged the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance regarding censorship.
His literary contributions include short story collections such as ‘Bisotun,’ ‘Cloudy Years,’ and ‘Dorzhti,’ alongside linguistic research including the ‘Kermanshah Kurdish Dictionary’ and studies on Iranian folklore. Darvishian passed away on October 26, 2017, following an illness.
