Ali Bongo Ondimba announces return to Gabonese politics
Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba has announced his intention to return to political life and reclaim leadership of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG). Speaking from Europe on October 21, 2026, Bongo contested the legitimacy of the party's current leadership under Blaise Louembé, which was established during a meeting on March 7, 2024.
Bongo claimed that his previous statements regarding his resignation were made under duress. “These words, I pronounced them in those circumstances, that is to say, under constraint,” he stated, seeking to nullify his September 2024 declaration of renunciation. He expressed frustration over a failed attempt to mediate a crisis, noting that an invitation for Louembé to meet in Paris was ignored.
Bongo aims to reposition the PDG as an opposition force and accused the current leadership of being an illegitimate de facto administration influenced by external forces. This move follows the August 2023 military coup led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, which ended 56 years of Bongo family rule in Gabon.
