Ali Diaite: The story of the Premier League's most famous football deception
Ahead of the new Premier League season, English media have revisited the story of Ali Diaite, a Senegalese player known for one of the most audacious deceptions in football history. Diaite, who recently celebrated his 61st birthday, successfully posed as the relative of Ballon d'Or winner George Weah to secure professional contracts.
In 1995, Diaite utilized the lack of internet verification to claim a history with Paris Saint-Germain and the Senegalese national team. While West Ham manager Harry Redknapp suspected the fraud, Southampton manager Graeme Souness signed him to a one-month contract after a planned trial match was canceled due to rain.
Diaite's technical deficiencies were immediately apparent during training, yet he was eventually subbed into a match against Leeds United following an injury to Matt Le Tissier. His performance was marked by significant errors, leading Souness to withdraw him from the game in the 85th minute and terminate his contract the following day.
