Ali Uçar preserves Sarıkeçili Yörük camel breeding tradition
Ali Uçar, a 73-year-old member of the Sarıkeçili Yörük community, is working to preserve the ancestral tradition of camel breeding and nomadic life. Known by the nickname ‘Kuş Ali’, Uçar has been working with camels since the age of 15.
Uçar states that he is among the last generation to maintain this specific camel-rearing tradition, noting that many others in the community have transitioned to using vehicles like cars and tractors. He currently maintains a herd of more than 10 camels.
The nomadic lifestyle involves a seasonal migration: the family spends the winter months in the Aydıncık district of Mersin and begins their journey in April to reach the Aladağ Mantarlık Plateau in Konya's Hadim district by early May. They typically remain in the plateau for approximately six months.
