Alibaba plans $10.2 billion Hong Kong share sale for AI expansion

Alibaba Group has announced a proposed HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) share placement in Hong Kong to accelerate its investment in artificial intelligence. The offering involves the issuance of 710 million ordinary shares at HK$112.70 per share, representing a 3.6% discount to the most recent closing price. This transaction is expected to be the largest primary follow-on offering by a company listed in Hong Kong and ranks as the third-largest globally this year.

The company intends to use 100% of the net proceeds to expand its full-stack AI capabilities, including semiconductor development, computing infrastructure, and the deployment of AI models. This capital raise follows a period of increased spending; Alibaba's quarterly capital expenditure rose 75% to approximately $10 billion in the June quarter.

While the company's AI Cloud and Compute Services revenue grew 45% to Rmb48.44 billion, Alibaba reported a 75% year-over-year decline in net profit for the April-to-June quarter, falling to Rmb10.5 billion ($1.6 billion). The share placement is restricted to non-U.S. persons under Regulation S and is being coordinated by financial institutions including Morgan Stanley, HSBC, UBS, and China International Capital Corp.
