Alibaba launches Qwen3.8‑Max, its most powerful AI model

Alibaba Group unveiled Qwen3.8‑Max, a new multimodal AI model with 2.4 trillion parameters built on a mixture‑of‑experts architecture that activates about 95 billion parameters per request. The model supports a context window of up to one million tokens and can process text, images and video.

In internal tests the system completed an autonomous software‑engineering project in 16 days and can run for more than ten days without human intervention. Benchmark results released by Alibaba show Qwen3.8‑Max ranking second globally on Arena AI’s visual‑analysis leaderboard behind Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and fifth in the text category. The company says the model’s performance is comparable to, and in some cases better than, Anthropic’s flagship model.

Alibaba will make the model’s weights publicly downloadable in the week starting 10 August, continuing its open‑weight strategy. Following the announcement, Alibaba’s Hong Kong‑listed shares rose about 7 %.

The launch is part of a broader China‑US AI race, with Chinese firms such as Moonshot AI and DeepSeek also releasing large open‑weight models.
