Alibaba promotes open-source AI strategy at Wuzhen Summit
Joe Tsai, chairman and co-founder of Alibaba, has advocated for open-source artificial intelligence to ensure the technology becomes more accessible and inclusive. Speaking at the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit in Zhejiang, China, Tsai argued that open models are essential for involving small businesses, researchers, and developing nations in the AI ecosystem.
Alibaba highlighted its Qwen model family as a central component of this strategy. The company reported that the Qwen family includes over 470 variants and has surpassed 4 billion downloads, leading to the creation of more than 330,000 derivative models by the user community. Tsai cited a non-profit in Uganda using Qwen to develop a local model supporting 68 African languages as evidence of how open models can reduce technological barriers.
This push for open AI aligns with Beijing's broader goals of strengthening national technological autonomy. During the summit, Premier Li Qiang called for open international dialogue on AI and cautioned against using national security as a justification to divide technological ecosystems.
