Alibaba's Qwen family of open-weight AI models has reportedly surpassed 3 billion global downloads over the last six months, positioning the company ahead of major American competitors such as Meta and Google.

According to data from the AI platform Hugging Face, Google's open models recorded approximately 418 million downloads and Meta's recorded 227 million in 2026. Alibaba has open-sourced more than 460 models within the Qwen ecosystem, which has generated over 300,000 derivative models. While Alibaba claims 3 billion downloads, Hugging Face reports approximately 2.045 billion downloads for the Qwen family.

Technically, the new Qwen3. 8-27B model has shown strong performance, reportedly outperforming Meta's Muse Glimmer on benchmarks like SWE-bench Pro and Terminal-Bench 2. 1. The model is designed to run on consumer-grade hardware and features a large context window. The rapid adoption of Qwen suggests a growing influence of Chinese AI models in the global open-source ecosystem, particularly as developers use them as foundations for specialized applications.
