Alibaba to charge large users for its Qwen3.8-Max AI model

Alibaba is introducing a new commercial licensing model for its upcoming flagship AI model, Qwen3.8-Max. Moving away from entirely free usage, the company plans to require large-scale commercial users to share a portion of their revenue generated using the model. This strategic shift aims to monetize high-value enterprise applications—such as coding assistants and automated workflows—while maintaining access for smaller developers.

The Qwen3.8-Max model is a significant technical release, featuring 2.4 trillion parameters and a one-million-token context window. It utilizes a Sparse Mixture-of-Experts architecture that activates only 95 billion parameters per token to manage computational costs. Alibaba intends to release the model's weights next week.

This move reflects a growing trend among Chinese AI firms. For example, the startup Moonshot utilizes a similar model for its Kimi K3, requiring commercial partners to share revenue if annual sales exceed $20 million. By implementing revenue-sharing, Chinese companies are attempting to balance market share expansion with the high costs of training and hosting frontier-level models.
