Alibaba unveils Qwen 3.8 AI model series with 2.4T parameters

Alibaba has announced the Qwen 3.8 series, a frontier-scale artificial intelligence model family. The flagship Qwen 3.8 is reported to feature 2.4 trillion parameters. A significant aspect of this release is Alibaba’s intention to provide the model with open weights, a rarity for models of this scale, which would allow for self-hosting and fine-tuning by developers.

An updated version, Qwen 3.8-Max-0902, has been released with enhanced capabilities in coding and professional office tasks. This version reportedly achieved first place on the CodeArena front-end programming leaderboard with a score of 1691. The update focuses on multi-step reasoning, tool calling, and end-to-end application generation. Additionally, the 0902 version is positioned as a cost-effective option, with a reported average price of $5 per million tokens, significantly lower than several high-performing competitors.
