Alicante and Isla Mujeres intensify mosquito control efforts
Authorities in Alicante, Spain, and Isla Mujeres, Mexico, are intensifying mosquito control measures following recent rainfall. In Alicante, the local health department is accelerating treatments in drains and water accumulation points to prevent mosquito proliferation. Officials are urging residents to eliminate breeding sites by emptying containers, covering water storage, and maintaining drainage systems. Specific advice was issued for cemeteries to avoid water accumulation in flower containers.
In Isla Mujeres, the municipal government is collaborating with health authorities to conduct nebulization campaigns across various neighborhoods, including the Southern Zone, Garrafón, and La Gloria. These efforts target the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The local government is also running a permanent program to remove discarded objects that collect water, emphasizing that nebulization must be paired with household cleaning and the elimination of breeding grounds.
