Alicante City Council enforces urban rules on luggage storage

The Alicante City Council has announced it will enforce current urban planning regulations regarding luggage storage facilities for tourists. Because the city's General Plan, dating from 1987, does not include this specific activity, the council has categorized these businesses as industrial. Under current rules, industrial activities are prohibited in the city center.

There are approximately twenty luggage storage businesses currently operating in central Alicante, many of which function autonomously via internet reservations or on-site card payments. These services are frequently used by tourists checking out of accommodations or travelers using the Adif station, which lacks its own storage facilities.

Municipal spokesperson Cristina Cutanda stated that the Urbanism department is simply complying with existing regulations, though she noted that the city may consider modifying the rules in the future to address the situation. The council has already begun issuing closure decrees, while business owners are calling for a legal framework to regularize their operations.
