Spain weather shifts from torrential storms to extreme heat

Spain is experiencing volatile weather patterns characterized by intense storms followed by a return to extreme heat. Heavy rainfall and torrential storms have recently impacted several regions, particularly in the Mediterranean areas such as Alicante, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands. In northern Alicante, rainfall exceeded 100 liters per square meter in some locations, prompting orange alerts and causing local flooding and infrastructure concerns. In response to these risks, several municipalities in the Vega Baja region activated preventive measures, including the suspension of outdoor activities and the closure of public facilities.

Following this period of instability and a temporary drop in temperatures, meteorological models indicate a significant shift. A Saharan air mass and a subtropical ridge are expected to move over the peninsula, causing temperatures to rise sharply. Forecasts suggest that maximum temperatures could approach 40°C in parts of the southwest and reach the high 30s across much of the country by early next week, effectively bringing summer-like conditions back to the region.
