Alicante historical landmarks: Castillo de Santa Bárbara and Cava Gran d’Agres

The province of Alicante features several significant historical and engineering landmarks. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, located atop Monte Benacantil at 166 meters above sea level, serves as a major medieval fortress overlooking the Mediterranean. Visitors can access the site via an elevator near Playa del Postiguet for 2.70 € or through a pedestrian path via the Barrio de Santa Cruz and Parque de la Ereta.

In the Sierra de Mariola, the Cava Gran d’Agres stands as a notable vestige of the ancient ice industry. Constructed in the 15th century, this hexagonal snow well reaches a depth of 12 meters and a diameter of nearly 15 meters. Partially excavated into living rock, the structure was designed to store up to 2,000 cubic meters of compressed snow, utilizing a unique arched design to maximize thermal insulation.
