Alicante promotes historical castles and towers tourism route

The Diputación de Alicante is promoting a cultural tourism route focused on the historical castles and towers located throughout the province. This initiative highlights the defensive and architectural heritage of the region, which spans from the coastal areas to the interior.

Key recommended sites include the Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante, the Castillo de la Atalaya in Villena, the Castillo de Dénia, and the Castillo de San José in El Castell de Guadalest. Other notable fortifications include the Torre de la Horadada, Castillo de Banyeres de Mariola, Castillo-Fortaleza de Santa Pola, Castillo de Castalla, Torre del Aguiló, and the Torre de Almudaina.

The structures range from large medieval castles to watchtowers originally used to defend against pirate attacks. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, situated atop Monte Benacantil, serves as a primary landmark and can be accessed via a rock-excavated elevator or pedestrian paths through the Santa Cruz neighborhood.
