Alicante to lose The Ocean Race after significant economic impact

Alicante will host The Ocean Race for the final time on January 17, 2027, marking the end of a nearly two-decade partnership. The decision to move future departures to Porto, Portugal, was confirmed recently, with Porto set to organize the 2030, 2034, and 2038 editions.

Over the course of six editions, the regatta has generated an estimated cumulative economic impact exceeding 500 million euros for the region. Reports from PwC and Deloitte indicate that between 2008 and 2022, the event attracted over 1.6 million visitors to the port area and supported the creation of approximately 8,011 permanent jobs.

The race has also provided substantial international visibility for the city. Media studies show nearly 60,000 articles mentioning Alicante as a departure port across five continents, with a global television audience surpassing 1 billion people.
