Alicante wine bottle from 200-year-old shipwreck exhibited in Zaragoza
A bottle of Alicante wine, recovered from a shipwreck over two centuries old, is being featured in the “Naufragios, arqueología sumergida” exhibition at CaixaForum Zaragoza. The artifact was retrieved from the Deltebre I, an English vessel that sank off the coast of Tarragona during the War of Independence.
Laboratory analyses of the wine revealed high quality in terms of variety, cultivation zone, and aging characteristics. Despite some contamination from the preservation processes of the cork and glass, the wine retained distinct traits, including sugar content typical of the Alicante region. The exhibition includes 38 objects recovered from the ship, which aim to reconstruct both its military function and the daily life of those on board.
