Alice Cooper explains 1974 breakup of Alice Cooper Group

Alice Cooper has reflected on his decision to disband the Alice Cooper Group in 1974, stating that the move was necessary to prevent the brand from dying. In a recent interview, Cooper explained that the band had hit a wall and could not progress further, leading him to pursue a solo career.

The transition was validated by the massive success of his 1975 debut solo album, ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’. Cooper noted that while he wished he could have brought more band members with him, the circumstances and the differing lifestyles of the members made a full transition impossible.

While bassist Dennis Dunaway suggested in his upcoming memoir, ‘Devil on My Shoulder’, that the split may have been motivated by money, Cooper denied this, asserting that his primary goal was to keep the ‘Alice’ persona alive. Cooper emphasized that there was no bad blood or legal conflict between the members, describing the event as a separation rather than a divorce.
