Alice Diop selected for 2026 Miu Miu Art Basel Paris commission

French filmmaker Alice Diop has been selected for the 2026 Miu Miu commission as part of the Art Basel Paris Public Program. Her exhibition, titled ‘Geste de Consolation’ (Gesture of Consolation), will be staged at the Palais d’Iéna and during the Miu Miu runway show.

The exhibition will integrate film, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance, music, and performance across four spaces. Diop intends for the curation to center on acts of consolation by Black women artists to address historical fetishization in art. The program includes a video installation, a library of Diop’s favorite books, and readings from authors such as Zora Neale Hurston, Audre Lorde, Marie NDiaye, and Zadie Smith.

Featured works include a monumental bronze sculpture by Simone Leigh titled ‘Sentinel (Mami Wata)’ and contributions from artists such as Zanele Muholi and Mary Lee Bendolph. The commission follows Diop’s previous work in the Miu Miu ‘Women’s Tales’ series, ‘Fragments for Venus,’ which explored the representation of Black women in Western art.
