Alice in Chains Issues 30th‑Anniversary Vinyl of 1996 MTV Unplugged Performance

Legacy Recordings is releasing a 30th‑anniversary edition of Alice in Chains' MTV Unplugged concert, recorded on April 10, 1996 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The set will be available in the United States on September 25 as a double‑LP vinyl, a standard black version, a solar‑flare coloured pressing sold through the band’s official store, and a ruby‑red edition offered by select retailers. A CD version will also be issued, but no new bonus material or special packaging is included.

The original Unplugged show marked the band’s first performance in nearly three years after vocalist Layne Staley’s heroin‑related health problems halted touring. It also featured guitarist Scott Olson, expanding the group to a five‑piece for the first time. The concert’s stripped‑down renditions of songs such as “Rooster,” “Down in a Hole,” “Would?” and “Nutshell” have become iconic, and the 1996 release originally reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and earned double‑platinum certification in 2022. The new vinyl release gives U.S. fans the chance to own the performance in a physical format for the first time since its initial issue.
