Brazil celebrates National Lesbian Pride Day with historical commemorations
Brazil celebrates National Lesbian Pride Day on August 19, a date commemorating the 1983 Ferro's Bar uprising in São Paulo. During the military dictatorship, activists led by Rosely Roth protested against the censorship of the Chana com Chana bulletin, the country's first publication dedicated exclusively to lesbians. This event is considered a turning point for the LGBTQ+ movement and the right to free expression in Brazil.
To mark the occasion, the Museu da Diversidade Sexual in São Paulo has inaugurated the Alice Oliveira exhibition. The showcase features 30 photographs, documents, and audiovisual records documenting feminist, lesbian, and LGBTQ+ movements across Brazil and Latin America during the 1980s and 1990s. The collection, curated by Pedro Vieira, aims to reconstruct historical narratives that were often lost due to the lack of documentation for dissident groups.
Additionally, the day serves to raise awareness against lesbophobia and violence motivated by sexual orientation, emphasizing the ongoing struggle for civil rights and visibility.
