Alice Springs community mourns Kumanjayi Little Baby

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Alice Springs to attend the funeral of Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old girl whose death has deeply impacted the Northern Territory community. Attendees wore pink to honor the child’s favorite color during the service at Alice Springs Garden Cemetery.

Kumanjayi Little Baby disappeared from the outskirts of Alice Springs in late April, prompting an extensive search by emergency services and volunteers. Her body was discovered south of the town on April 30. Jefferson Lewis, 47, has been charged with her murder and is currently awaiting trial in Darwin.

The case has sparked significant local and national tension, including a riot outside Alice Springs Hospital following Lewis's arrest. Additionally, a review of the Northern Territory’s child protection system recommended sweeping changes after finding that workers failed to adequately assess safety threats to the child's family. Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill described the period following the death as a “collective trauma” for the town.
