Alice Weidel calls for end to German aid to Ukraine

Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has called for an end to German financial and military assistance to Ukraine. In an interview with The Economist, Weidel asserted that Ukraine cannot achieve a military victory against Russia and characterized the conflict as a "lost war." She argued that continuing to fund the war is an economic burden on Germany, noting that the country is approaching 100 billion euros in expenditures while facing significant domestic debt.

Weidel advocated for a "Germany first" approach, suggesting that Berlin should apply political pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the fighting. She also proposed that Germany should seek new energy agreements with Russia for diesel, oil, and natural gas to support German businesses and consumers.

These statements follow a recent motion passed in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament by the AfD and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party. The motion called for the cessation of non-humanitarian financial aid and weapon deliveries to Kyiv, as well as the lifting of economic sanctions against Russia. While the motion was passed in the regional parliament, the authority to change federal foreign policy and sanctions remains with the German federal government and the European Union.
