Alicia Esteve documentary explores 9/11 survivor hoax
Director Kike Maíllo has released a new documentary, ‘La superviviente’, exploring the story of Alicia Esteve, a woman who famously impersonated a 9/11 survivor known as Tania Head.
For years, Esteve claimed to be one of the few people to survive on the 78th floor of the South Tower. She shared elaborate stories of being rescued by a volunteer and losing her fiancé, David Scott Suárez, in the North Tower. These fabrications allowed her to rise to the position of president of the World Trade Center Survivors Network and meet high-profile figures like former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The deception was uncovered in 2007 by New York Times journalists David W. Dunlap and Serge F. Kovaleski. Investigations revealed that Esteve was actually a student in Barcelona during the attacks and had never entered the Twin Towers. Because Esteve declined to participate in the documentary, actress Hannah Becker portrays her, using therapy recordings and writings to reconstruct the truth.
