Alicia Esteve Head: Documentary explores 9/11 impostor story
The documentary ‘La superviviente’, directed by Kike Maíllo, explores the life of Alicia Esteve Head, a woman from Barcelona who famously impersonated a 9/11 survivor. Under the alias Tania Head, she claimed to have survived the collapse of the South Tower of the World Trade Center and lost her fiancé in the attacks. Her fabricated story gained international recognition, leading her to become the president of the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network.
In 2007, an investigation by The New York Times revealed that her claims were false, including her employment at Merrill Lynch and her education at Harvard and Stanford. The film seeks to examine the psychological motivations behind the deception and the moral ambiguity of a woman who used her false identity to perform significant institutional work and personal financial contributions to the survivors' association.
Biographical accounts also highlight Esteve’s earlier life in Mallorca, where she grew up in an affluent environment involving equestrian interests, a stark contrast to the persona she constructed in the United States.
