Alija Izetbegović commemorated on 23rd anniversary of death

Commemorations were held in Sarajevo to mark the 23rd anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegović, the first President of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Various delegations laid flowers at the Kovači Martyrs' Cemetery, and a formal academy was organized at the National Theatre in Sarajevo to honor his life and political legacy.

Izetbegović, a lawyer, thinker, and founder of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), led the country through the Bosnian War and the subsequent negotiations that resulted in the Dayton Peace Agreement. He is remembered by supporters as a symbol of the struggle for independence and state integrity, while critics have raised controversial political points.

On the same day, billboards appeared in East Sarajevo featuring Izetbegović's image and messages accusing him of war crimes against the Serbian people. These displays were condemned by the Sarajevo Memorial Center and the SDA Youth Association as attempts at historical revisionism and political provocation intended to increase national tensions.
