Dangote Petroleum Refinery launches 2.15 trillion naira IPO
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has launched a historic initial public offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange, aiming to raise approximately 2.15 trillion naira (roughly $1.6 billion). The offering consists of 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at 525 naira each, with a subscription period running from September 14, 2026, to October 13, 2026. Aliko Dangote has characterized the move as a ‘People’s IPO,’ designed to democratize wealth by allowing retail investors to participate with a minimum investment of just 10 shares (5,250 naira).
The IPO has triggered significant market activity, causing high traffic that overwhelmed several Nigerian investment platforms, including Bamboo and Cowrywise. The refinery, which cost approximately $20 billion to build, recently reported a net profit of $1.82 billion for the first half of 2026, a major turnaround from a $476 million loss in 2025. This financial recovery was bolstered by the facility's role in supplying jet fuel to Europe during regional supply disruptions.
Beyond the capital raise, the refinery is central to Nigeria's strategy to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. Aliko Dangote also noted that petrol smuggling to neighboring countries, driven by price differences of 30 to 50 percent, remains a challenge for domestic fuel availability.
